“Power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues and freebooters. All Indian leaders will be of low calibre and men of straw,” - Winston Churchill on the eve of Indian Independence.
We may hate him or even love him for whatever reasons but it’s sure that this person had an amazing foresight by which he predicted of the future of the Indian democracy. This single comment of Sir Churchill, on the eve of Indian independence, earned indignation from the patriots of the country and some even censured him severely. But don’t we witness that those worst fears are becoming true after all these 60 years of Indian democracy!
Where are those stalwarts who once used to glorify the corridors of power and the floor of Parliament? There was a time when both the government and opposition used to have leading luminaries whose exchanges of words and ideas were used to be admired. Be it Jawaharlal Nehru, S.P. Mukherjee, Hiren Mukherjee, Madhu Dandvate, Madhu Limaye or Jyotirmoy Basu, all of them were ideals before this vast nation by means of their dedications, intellects and deeds.
On the contrary, we are sending MPs to the Parliament who are paupers in each and every respect. Perhaps there is no such day when the Parliament, nowadays, ends without any pandemonium and even the “honorable” members are found to ridicule at the speakers from the other side. This was also seen yesterday when the debate on trust vote was in full momentum. While on side there were the rustic pranks of the Railway Minister, on the other there was a horde inane speeches that discussed everything except the central issue of Indo-US nuclear deal.
The victory of the UPA government amidst the scandals of horse-trading along with allegations and barbs is nothing unusual. It is expected from a murky democratic atmosphere that has reached depths of despair.
Where shall we go from here? Can the suave Prime Minister restore pride that the Indian Parliament used to have once? God help him!
